Biography
Pascal Bortz, MD, is a surgeon specializing in advanced laparoscopic, robotic and bariatric surgery. He was recently appointed chief of general surgery and director of robotic surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, reflecting his leadership, clinical excellence and commitment to advancing surgical care. He provides comprehensive surgical treatment with expertise in gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and SADI-S weight-loss procedures, as well as minimally invasive foregut, hernia, gallbladder, colon, and intestinal surgery and endoscopy. Dr. Bortz uses the latest techniques and technology to help patients achieve safer procedures, faster recovery and excellent outcomes.
Dr. Bortz believes exceptional surgical care begins with understanding each patient as an individual. He takes time to listen, answer questions and tailor treatment plans to each person’s unique needs, ensuring patients feel informed, confident and supported throughout their surgical journey.
He has presented his research on abdominal hernia repair at the American College of Surgeons national conference and has shared his work on improving post-operative pain control in bariatric surgery at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons national meeting, reflecting his dedication to advancing surgical care and enhancing patient experience. He is also a member of ASMBS committees helping further weight loss access to patients whether through medications or surgery.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Bortz lives in University City with his wife and three children. He enjoys playing tennis, bowling, scuba diving and cooking.
